Lois Takaoka studied studio painting at UC Berkeley under figurative and abstract expressionist painters from the Hans Hoffman School. After raising a family, Lois resumed her painting in earnest with figurative and abstract landscapes. She began exploring the world of surrealism. In her figurative paintings, Lois was inspired by familiar gestures, working in dialogue with the painted situation. Her imaginative landscapes, through a discourse with unreality, sought consistency, as well as a fundamental truth. She intended to generate an interactivity, or conversation, with the viewer as part of a "visit" with the painting. Lois enjoyed challenging herself artistically. In her imaginary landscapes and still lifes, for instance, she decided to develop series of paintings using a limited palette. She was working to cultivate a direct, up-front style, with added layers of subtlety. As she moved forward, Lois consistently sought to add a higher level of complexity and refinement to her work. Lois passed away on July 1, 2008. She will be much missed by all. |
